Halal and Islamic Tourism: Exploring the Landscape and the Muslim Traveller’s Journey
May 21, 2026
Halal and Islamic Tourism: Exploring the Landscape and the Muslim Traveller’s Journey, by Prof. Hera Oktadiana (James Cook University), is a new release from Channel View Publications.
The book offers key insights into the motivations, experiences, and preferences of Muslim travellers, with particular attention to women and the role of Maqasid al-Shari‘ah in shaping faith-informed journeys. It also examines how sustainability, emerging trends, and technology are redefining travel across the Muslim world. Blending academic insight with personal reflection and stories from the field, it is positioned as a resource for scholars, practitioners, destination managers, and policymakers alike.
Early endorsements come from Professor Kaye Chon (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University), Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno (entrepreneur and former Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Republic of Indonesia), Professor Fevzi Okumus (University of South Carolina), and Professor Sarah Gardiner (Griffith University), who describe it as a timely, field-bridging roadmap for developing inclusive, value-driven, and future-ready Muslim-friendly tourism.
Inside the book
Across seven chapters, the book moves from foundational concepts of Islamic and Halal tourism through Muslim tourists and Muslim women’s travel experiences, to products and services, destinations, sustainable and responsible tourism, and the evolving landscape and future outlook — framed by forewords, a preface, an afterword, and supporting appendices.
